It's very rare in life that things turn out right first time and it often takes a few attempts to reach perfection. This page gives you a real-life example about how our iterative approach to designing our aids
The current school closures has lead to many of us parents worrying about how we can best support our children and ensure they retain some structure.
For those of us who's children are Autistic, the need for structure becomes even more present so we decided to build a daily planner
We started off by thinking about the daily routine and the various activities that we do (such as getting dressed, going for a walk, exercising and so forth).
Each activity has a tick-box so they could be checked off when they're done
Then a couple of spaces for some free-time were added in and that resulted in this
A free-time "Choice" card was built with space for some favouritve free-time activities such as watching TV, playing video games and listening to music.
All of this worked well for the first few days, but after that we started to get push-back. Possibly because of of the change in routine, or because the routine was too structured or (most likely a combination of the two).
With a child who cannot voice their emotions and frustrations, it is often a guessing game!
With this in mind, it was time to go back to the drawing board and think about how it could be changed to give more flexibility.
After an evening walk around the neighbourhood, the idea of making a chart where we can decide together every day's routine was struck upon and the new chart was built using removable tokens instead of fixed activities.
We felt that both products had their merits and so both will be available online. The simple planner comes in boy and girl versions with a choice card and six activity tokens.
The flexible plannero comes in both girl and boy versions as well as a more grown-up version. All three come with four task tokens and a choice card with six different activity tokens.
